Maserati:

This is a very special car and so because of that, I am not just going to jump right into things. I first want to talk about Maserati, who they are, and the history of the company! Maserati is an Italian auto maker that was founded in 1914 in Bologna, Italy. The company was started by the five Maserati brothers who were all involved in the company in some way or another. The company has been making classy sports cars for over 100 years now and their prestige is more than exceptional. It is important to note though that, as of recent, their cars have not been all too good. However, in this article, we are going to promptly ignore that and do what 1969 Inc. does best, which is to turn to the past! In this article, we are going to be talking about a car that was conceived and designed roughly 70 years ago. We are going to be talking about the 1951 Maserati A6G/2000 Spyder.

Before we dive into this car though I would like to talk about the man who designed it. There were lots of designers and engineers working on this car but the most important one was a designer by the name of Pietro Frua. Frua was an Italian coach designer who did a lot of design for Maserati in the 1950s — 1960s. The 1951 A6G/2000 was one of the first cars that he ever worked on for Maserati. We can see, simply by the design of the car, that Pietro deserves all the respect he receives and that he was not just any other designer. So, now that we know all about the two parties involved, let’s talk about this Maserati.

The A6G/2000:

The name of the car, the A6G/2000, is rather long and complicated so let’s start with that. What does the name mean? From 1947 to 1956, Maserati released a long line of car grand tourers, racing cars, and single seaters under the A6 line. So, the A6G/2000 is a version of that A6 model that has had some pretty cool additions. Also important, the 2000 in the name represents the estimated engine displacement. The first and most important thing to notice about this car is that, while it is a two seater, grand touring car, it is also a spyder. In the world of sports cars and luxury vehicles, spyder is just another name for a convertible. So, this is the A6 convertible version. However, while that is one of the most important features, it is not the only change.

It is not often that we see a car with three headlights, and even less often that we see a good looking car with three headlights. At first, many people don’t even notice the third head light. This is because it is tucked away in the middle of the grill a little below the other two headlights. This headlight layout makes this car even rarer then other A6 models. To add to that, this was one of the few A6’s that was graced by the touch of the previously mentioned designer, Pietro Frau. If you look in the listing description for this car, you can clearly see many times that it say ‘by Frau’, because this car was specifically designed by him.

The Looks:

Just to specify, I am going to judge and discuss the looks of the car that is listed for sale and not all of the A6G/2000s. The car in question is a sleek and dark blue color that makes the car look proper and sophisticated. It has been polished to the point where the paint has a perfect sheen that sparkles in the daylight. Around the body, the car has certain chrome aspects that are also extremely clean and shiny. The grill on the front has a beautifully elegant shape. As you move more towards the rear of the car, you first will notice the three signature chrome vents on the side of the car. Maserati cars today still have this feature, which I think is pretty cool. As you get to the cockpit, you will first notice the beautiful shape of the windshield, and then the red canvas top that folds up to sit right behind the driver position. Finally, the rear of the car swoops back to two chrome rear fenders.

All of this together makes for one of the most beautifully styled and classy cars to have ever graced this Earth. Maserati and Pietro Frua did a fantastic job on this car as it is truly a wonderful piece of machinery. Let’s not forget the interior though. The interior is made from a beautiful red leather. In cars today, the seat is usually the only leather part, and maybe the steering wheel. However, as you can see, in this car they were not messing around. The entire interior is covered in that beautiful which I am sure makes for a very comfortable driving experience. The dials are also very classy and look extremely well made. While this car is not a sports car or racing car by nature, it is still a drivers car. So, lets talk about some of the specs on this car!

Specs and Price:

The car has a 2.0L naturally aspirated inline 6-cylinder. The engine had a single overhead camshaft and three carburetors that allowed it to put out almost 100hp. I would like to say that while this may not sound like a lot to people today, 100hp was a lot back then! Not to mention the fact that the car was extremely light. The engine ran through a gated four speed manual and the directly to the rear axle. The car could reach a top speed of 112 mph, which, again, for 1951 was extremely fast! However, speed was not the whole point of this car. This car was made to cruise through Tuscany with the top down and to take in the warm Italian air.

I will admit, I have purposely waited till the end of this article to talk about the price tag on this car. The car is currently on sale for $4.25 million through Hemmings classic car sales. Now, I know that this may seem like an unreasonable price for an old Maserati. However, there are a few things here to take into account. The first is that this is one of only three of these cars that were ever made, making it more than rare. To add to that, the design and beauty of this car are unparalleled and the quality of the car after 70 years is still extremely high. So, in all fairness, I think that $4.25 million is actually quite a reasonable price for such a sought after car.

I personally think that this is one of the most beautiful cars ever designed and that it deserves a good owner who will further preserve it into the future.
